Dr. Anna Everett

Dr. Anna Everett is a media historian, and Emeritus Professor of Film and Media Studies at the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB) after 22 years. She has held several leadership positions on local and national boards, community organizations, and public office. Dr. Everett is passionate about her work in the community as an advocate actively engaged in public service work across Santa Barbara County that aims to improve the lives of and opportunities for all members of our beloved community. She is especially interested in contributing to the advancement of equity of opportunity for Santa Barbara women and girls from all walks of life, including all races and ethnicities, all genders, all ages, all abilities, and all economic classes. Currently, Dr. Everett’s community work involves serving as an appointed Commissioner of the County of Santa Barbara Commission for Women, and as an elected Trustee of the Santa Barbara City College Board of Trustees.
Regarding her academic background, she is a Ford Foundation Fellow, and a two-time recipient of the Fulbright Senior Scholar Award, a MacArthur Foundation Subject Area Expert, among other honors and awards. As a researcher and scholar her many publications include the books Returning the Gaze: A Genealogy of Black Film Criticism, 1909-1949; Learning Race and Ethnicity: Youth and Digital Media, AfroGeeks: Beyond the Digital Divide, Digital Diaspora: A Race for Cyberspace, among other books and articles. At UCSB Dr. Everett held several administrative positions including a Center Director, a Department Chair, and an Interim Associate Vice Chancellor of Diversity. Most recently, Dr. Everett has launched a diversity, equity, and inclusion consulting business, EDS (Everett Diversity Strategies+).
