Theatre Complex

Built in 1977, the Drama Music Building was a state-of -the art training and performance facility in which young (and not so young) actors, musicians, technicians and craft people could both learn and test their skills in the performing arts. After 32 years we embarked upon a major upgrade that restored the complex to a "like new" condition" and yielded numerous improvements both for our future students and, of course, our audiences. The renovation was spearheaded by award-winning theatre architect John Sergio Fisher.
The renovation was funded in large measure by the people of the State of California along with local funding authorized by the SBCC Board of Trustees and a District Bond "Measure V." Some of the improvements in the Garvin Theatre are new seats, side entrances, a cross-over aisle, handrails, larger bathrooms, a roomier lobby and box office with all areas designed to be fully accessible. Behind the scenes the project included many technical and physical improvements that afford our students the opportunity to learn the latest techniques and technologies and to better equip them to enter future careers in music, theatre and the entertainment industry. The plans anticipated the need for ongoing improvements and will ensure that the SBCC Drama/Music complex remains a vital and vibrant arts center. Now you can be a part of the Garvin Theatre by donating and having your name or dedication on one of the permanent new seats in the Theatre.
